Orthotics 101

People punish their feet daily by wearing ill-fitting shoes or by walking around on feet that do not function properly. In fact, 75% of North Americans will experience foot health issues of varying degrees, at some point in their lives. Educate yourself and start improving the health of your feet today!

What are orthotics?

Orthotics are orthopedic devices that are used to alter or modify foot function and are designed to treat, adjust, and support various biomechanical foot and/or ankle disorders. Some orthotics are simple, commercially-made devices, such as cushioned heel cups or insoles for shoes that are sold over the counter in drug stores or other retail establishments.

The most effective orthotics, however, are custom-made devices that are crafted to meet the specific needs of a particular individual. Custom orthotics are created using an impression of the foot called a cast, which duplicates any misalignments in foot structure. Using the cast and computer technology, technicians in an orthotic laboratory design a device that balances out deformities and corrects misalignments.

The finished orthotic is placed in the patient’s shoe to support the foot and eliminate abnormal foot biomechanics by keeping the foot properly aligned and supported.

How do I know if I need orthotics?

You definitely need orthotics if:

  • You participate in any activity that places stress on your feet.
  • You have an obvious imbalance that causes such symptoms as flat or high arched feet.
  • You have external malalignments such as bow knees, knock knees, pigeon-toes, or “duck feet.”
  • You’ve already developed chronic foot problems, ranging from corns and calluses to arch pain and heel spur pain.
  • Your job requires being on your feet for extended periods of time.

Why is it important to take care of my feet?

The average person takes 8000 to 10,000 steps per day

Your feet have an important job; they carry you throughout the day, with every step making an impact on your body. If your foot functions improperly it will have an effect on joints higher up the kinetic chain (your ankle, knee, hip and spine). This may result in pain or discomfort. Most individuals will seek out medical attention for the symptoms they are experiencing in their joints, but do not realize the source of their pain is their feet.

What should I look for, when shopping for shoes?

Most individuals buy shoes that do not properly fit their feet and that tend to aggravate foot ailments. When shopping for shoes make sure you go in the afternoon, your feet swell during the day. Also bring the proper socks for the style of shoe you will be buying, and if applicable, bring your custom orthotics. Shoe sizes vary based on the shoe make and style, do not always assume you will be the same size every time.

How do I know if my shoe fits properly?

Achieving the Proper Fit includes:

  • The toe box should have a ton of room; make sure you can wiggle your toes.
  • Ensure the width fits properly (your forefoot should never be wider than the shoe).
  • Your heel should be stable within the heel counter.
  • The shoes should feel comfortable the moment you try them on.
